Frequently asked questions about...

How many cycles can the iris diaphragms endure?

That depends on the iris size and the load the iris has to take. Under normal conditions the lifetime of an iris is several-hundred-thousand cycles.

Should I lubricate the iris diaphragms?

Under no circumstances should any lubrication be applied to the iris, especially the leaves. This would destroy the iris after a few cycles. The coating on the leaves is designed as a permanent dry lubricant.

The catalog lists that pinholes are available in stainless steel and gold-coated copper. Which pinhole is which material?

The Standard Pinholes (mounted and unmounted) in the 04 PIP and 04 PPM series are made from stainless steel.

The High-Energy Laser Pinholes (mounted and unmounted) in the 04 PHP and 04 PHM series are made from copper with a hard coating of gold on one side and a black coating on the other.

What is the damage threshold of the Standard Pinholes?

The steel Standard Pinholes have a typical cw damage threshold of 1 kW/cm2.

Your catalog mentions that the High-Energy Laser Pinholes are tested to withstand up to 50 MW/mm2, is that correct?

No. There was a typographical error in the printed version of Catalog X. The typical damage threshold is actually 50 MW/cm2. The online version of the catalog reflects this change.
